ABOUT US
What is Hmong American Student Association?
The Hmong American Student Association of Michigan State University, better known as HASA, was founded in 1997 by aspiring students who sought the need to create a collaborative Hmong community in our institution, educate the community about the Hmong culture, and promote Hmong cultural awareness to MSU's campus and the greater Lansing area.
We are a student-driven organization. Our primary focus is to serve as a forum for Hmong students so we may address any issues or concerns they have while attending MSU. Through our work, we hope to form friendships and serve as a support system for one another.
Lastly, being involved in HASA gives our members the opportunity to develop leadership skills, a greater sense of identity, network with other Hmong students throughout the country, and serve our community.
Who are the Hmong?
The Hmong are an ethnic group that originated in China and can be found all across the world today, predominantly in Southeast Asia in Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand. In the United States, Hmong populations are concentrated in the states of California, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and South Carolina.
How did the Hmong get to America?
The Hmong assisted US troops in the Vietnam War and the Secret War in the 70s. After American withdrawal from the region, many of the Hmong fled westward to seek asylum from genocide in Thailand where the refugees would be sent then transported to live in Australia, France, and the US.
